CONCRETE DRIVEWAYS QUESTIONS.

How thick should my driveway be?

Residential standard is 4 inches with rebar or fiber reinforcement. Heavy vehicles or RV pads we spec 5-6 inches. Going thinner saves a few hundred dollars upfront and costs you the slab in 8-10 years.

Will it crack?

Hairline shrinkage cracks are normal and unavoidable in any concrete slab — the goal is to control where they happen with proper joint cuts. Major structural cracks come from inadequate base prep, which we don't do.

Tear-out and replace, or overlay?

Resurfacing/overlay works on driveways with sound base but cosmetic damage. If the slab is heaving, badly cracked, or has settled, full tear-out and re-pour is the only durable answer.

Stamped or exposed aggregate vs broom finish?

Stamped/exposed run 30-50% more than broom finish. They look great new but show wear sooner. Most homeowners go broom finish — best ROI.

How long before I can drive on it?

7 days for cars, 14 days for full vehicle weight. You can walk on it after 24 hours.

Will it survive Utah winters?

Yes — when properly poured, cut, and cured. Use calcium chloride or sand instead of rock salt for ice melt; rock salt is much harder on the surface.
